DIDfarm Numbers — Complete Guide

Numbers · 10 min read Numbers Overview
Everything you need to know about DIDfarm numbers. This guide covers number types, ordering, call routing, SMS capabilities, regulatory requirements, pricing, and the full number lifecycle from activation to release.

What Are DID Numbers?

A DID (Direct Inward Dialing) number is a virtual phone number that routes incoming calls over the internet to your phone system. Unlike traditional phone lines, DID numbers are not tied to a physical location or copper wire. You can have a London number ring on a PBX in Amsterdam, or a New York number forwarded to a mobile in Berlin.

DIDfarm provides DID numbers in 70+ countries. Numbers connect to your infrastructure via SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), the standard for internet-based voice communication.

Number Types

DIDfarm offers four types of numbers, each suited to different use cases:

Type Format Example Best For Caller Cost
Local +31 20 123 4567 Establishing a local presence in a specific city Local rate for the caller
National +31 85 123 4567 Country-wide presence without a city association National rate
Mobile +31 6 1234 5678 SMS-enabled numbers, mobile caller ID Mobile rate
Toll-free +31 800 123 4567 Customer service lines (you pay for inbound minutes) Free for the caller
Availability varies by country. Not all number types are available in every country. The order flow shows only the types available for your selected country.

How to Order

Ordering numbers takes three steps:

  1. Find a number — go to Buy Numbers, pick a country and number type, then browse or search available numbers.
  2. Add to cart — select one or more numbers. The cart shows the monthly cost per number and the total.
  3. Checkout — confirm your order. The cost is deducted from your wallet. Numbers that do not require regulatory verification activate instantly.
Instant activation: In most countries, numbers activate within seconds of checkout. You will receive an email confirmation with the number details and can begin routing calls immediately.

Forwarding & Routing

Once a number is active, you decide where incoming calls go. DIDfarm supports SIP-based routing:

  • SIP Trunk — assign the number to a SIP trunk connected to your PBX (3CX, FreePBX, Asterisk, Teams, etc.). This is the most common setup.
  • Multiple numbers, one trunk — assign several numbers to the same trunk. Your PBX uses the dialed number (DID) to route each call to the correct extension, queue, or IVR.
  • Per-number routing — assign different numbers to different trunks for multi-site or multi-client setups.

Routing is managed in the DID Routing section of the portal. Changes take effect within seconds.

SMS on Numbers

SMS capability depends on the number type and country. Mobile numbers in supported countries can send and receive SMS messages. Local and toll-free numbers generally do not support SMS.

To check whether a number supports SMS, look for the SMS indicator in the order flow or in your number list in the portal.

SMS availability: SMS support varies significantly by country and carrier. Some countries restrict SMS on virtual numbers entirely. Check the number details before ordering if SMS is a requirement.

Regulatory Requirements

Many countries require identity verification before a phone number can be activated. This is a legal requirement imposed by national telecom regulators, not a DIDfarm policy.

Common requirements include:

  • Proof of identity — passport, national ID card, or driver's license
  • Proof of address — utility bill, bank statement, or official registration document
  • Local address — some countries require a physical address within the country (for local numbers)
  • Company registration — business numbers may require a chamber of commerce extract or VAT registration

Countries with regulatory requirements include Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, and many others. The checkout process will tell you exactly which documents are needed and guide you through the upload process.

Country Documents Required Typical Review Time
Germany (DE) ID + proof of address 1–3 business days
France (FR) ID + proof of address 1–3 business days
Netherlands (NL) ID + proof of address 1–2 business days
Belgium (BE) ID + proof of address 1–3 business days
United Kingdom (GB) Usually none (instant) Instant
United States (US) Usually none (instant) Instant

Pricing

DIDfarm pricing has two components:

  • Monthly fee — a fixed per-number charge billed monthly. This covers number rental and basic inbound capacity. Prices vary by country and number type, starting from around EUR 1.00/month.
  • Usage charges — per-minute rates for inbound and outbound calls. Inbound is free for most number types (except toll-free, where you pay for inbound minutes). Outbound rates depend on the destination.

Current prices are always shown in the order flow before checkout. There are no setup fees, no contracts, and no minimum commitment.

No hidden fees: The price shown at checkout is the price you pay. Monthly renewals are automatically deducted from your wallet balance on the same date each month.

Number Lifecycle

A DIDfarm number goes through the following states:

Status Description
Available Number is in inventory and can be purchased
Provisioning Purchase is being processed (usually seconds)
Pending verification Waiting for regulatory documents to be submitted and approved
Active Number is live and receiving calls. Renews monthly from wallet.
Suspended Number is temporarily disabled (insufficient funds or admin action). Can be reactivated.
Released Number has been returned to the carrier pool. Cannot be recovered.
Keep your wallet funded. If your wallet balance is too low to cover a monthly renewal, the number may be suspended and eventually released. Released numbers cannot be recovered.
